Intensive race between AI giants — Google, Chat GPT, ByteDance
While OpenAI and Google have impressed with their cutting-edge innovations, we believe ByteDance has taken a commendable approach with its affordable model strategy, targeting a broader user base.
Open AI and Chat GPT- 4o
The tech community was impressed by its real-time multimodal interaction capabilities across text, audio, and images. The model responds to audio in just 232 milliseconds, mirroring human conversation, and showcasing advanced audio technology that conveys emotions and alters tones seamlessly.
GPT-4o also interprets charts, assists with coding, reads emotions, and analyzes images through a camera, all while maintaining a cheerful tone. This new model’s human-like interaction signals AGI is drawing near.
Google unveiled the lineup of AI technologies
Google’s Veo, intended to rival Sora AI, disappointed us with its output lacking the dynamic camera movements of its competitor. However, Astra stole the show, offering real-time interactions similar to GPT-4o. Positioned as Google’s most advanced AI agent, Astra aims to “do anything”. Meanwhile, Gemini received a major upgrade to version 1.5, integrating into various Google services.
Yet, since Google’s event was mainly pre-recorded, it didn’t generate much excitement. Also, these AI models are still in testing and not ready for widespread use.
ByteDance stuns with competitive pricing
ByteDance unveiled eight versions of its advanced language model, Doubao. Noticeably, the incredibly competitive pricing compared to rivals. Specifically, Doubao Pro starts at just 0.0008 yuan (0.011 cents USD) for 1,000 token prompts. This comes as quite a shock for us, given that it represents a staggering 99.8% reduction compared to OpenAI’s GPT-4. Currently, GPT-4 is priced at 0.42 yuan for the same service, while rivals Baidu’s Ernie and Alibaba’s Tongyi Qianwen charge 0.12 yuan.

Asia — A Growing and Innovating AI Hub
Across Asia, a surge of initiatives is unleashing the potential of AI, fueling economic growth, sparking innovation, and boldly addressing societal issues.
The collaborative support from the South Korean and Japanese governments is bolstering their status as tech leaders in Asia. Japan’s dedication to AI is evident through the leadership of top companies like NEC and SoftBank, spearheading the development of customized language models. Meanwhile, South Korea’s comprehensive AI development plan includes investments to drive AI applications across diverse sectors, enhancing its global competitiveness.
In Southeast Asia, 2024 will witness a surge in data centers, driven by the escalating demand for AI development. These data centers play a crucial role in fueling the AI revolution, offering immense processing power and storage capacity for vital data driving AI advancements, making this region an attractive destination for tech giants.
Singapore takes the lead in Southeast Asia with its abundance of data centers, yet faces hurdles like space, power, and water shortages. Meanwhile, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, and the Philippines are revving up their efforts, intensifying the competition for a slice of the Southeast Asian market.
What should Vietnam Do to Secure a Spot on the Global AI Stage?
Aniday acknowledges that our path to AI success in Vietnam hinges on three critical factors: robust infrastructure, a skilled workforce, and progressive trial policies.
The endeavor to elevate digital infrastructure
Vietnam’s data center market is among the world’s fastest-growing, fueled by the digitalization of local SMEs, a tech-savvy young population, the advent of 5G, the demand for self-sufficient digital infrastructure, and data localization laws.
In the coming years, we are poised for a data center boom in Vietnam, with the market projected to reach $1.27 billion by 2030 and a compound annual growth rate of 10.8%.
In May, VNG — Vietnamese Tech Unicorn — entered into strategic partnerships with two foreign investors, including ST Telemedia Global Data Centers. This collaboration aims to continue the operation of STT VNG 1 and to launch a new data center, STT VNG 2, which will offer superior access capabilities. Furthermore, as an official partner of Nvidia’s cloud service, VNG will enjoy priority access to the AI Factory and Nvidia’s cutting-edge AI chip generations.
Government Initiatives and Support for AI Development
The Prime Minister has issued Decision №127/QD-TTg on the National Strategy for Research, Development, and Application of Artificial Intelligence until 2030. This strategy aims to ‘promote research, development, and application of artificial intelligence, establishing AI as a crucial technological field for Vietnam in the Fourth Industrial Revolution.’ It seeks to contribute to socio-economic development and position Vietnam as a leading hub for AI research, development, and application both regionally and globally.
On the ground, universities, research institutes, and ICT enterprises have been actively conducting studies and applying AI in diverse areas such as image recognition for traffic and security cameras, Vietnamese language processing, spam message filtering, and information security.
Highly Skilled Workforce Development
Yet, in Vietnam’s growing AI and digital tech sectors, we’re tackling a skills gap. Despite substantial government investment, as of May 2023, only 300 AI experts are in the workforce, per the World Intellectual Property Organisation. Recognizing the crucial role of training providers, we’re reshaping curricula to match industry demands. Our focus is on creating engaging, industry-aligned content for rapid learning.
Moreover, policies are urgently needed to draw both local and global talent to Vietnam’s workforce. Like leading nations, we must actively scout for talent. Therefore, businesses can attract foreign experts, nurture young talent through training, and collaborate with training institutions. Employers can also leverage headhunting agencies like Aniday to access global talent pools and overcome geographic barriers.
